Muskogee Inn is owned and operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians; the only federally recognized Indian Tribe in Alabama, which operates as a sovereign nation with its own government, laws and infrastructure. The Tribe owns a variety of economic enterprises and employs hundreds of area residents. The Poarch Band of Creek Indians is an active partner in the state of Alabama, contributing to economic, educational, social and cultural projects benefiting both Tribal Members and residents of the local community and neighboring towns.
Originally the Poarch Band of Creek Indians were not known by the name Creek. They referred to themselves as Muskogee, pronounced “muss-KOH-gee.” Yet because their villages were found by the waterways of the areas, the English referred to the Muskogee Indians as Creek, which is the English name for river. The Poarch Band of Creek Indians descended from a segment of the original Creek Nation, which covered almost all of Georgia and Alabama. Although most of the other Creek Indians were removed from their land, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians avoided removal and have lived together for hundreds of years in and around the reservation in Poarch, Ala., off I-65 at exit 54, eight miles northwest of Atmore, Ala.
Muskogee Inn operated as Best Western of Atmore for many years after the Poarch Band of Creek Indians purchased it. However, the Tribe wanted to put their own mark on the hotel and began transforming the look and feel of the place. Creek Indian heritage can be seen throughout the property, with photos and memorabilia adorning the lobby and the walls of each building.
The name of the hotel changed in 2009 to further reflect the Native American culture. Branding as an independent local lodging establishment has proven to be worth it. Guests return again and again to Muskogee Inn, enjoying the hospitality and budget friendly prices the hotel offers every day.
